Anwer Fareed Alam and Yousofzay Fahim Alam of Temecula were sentenced to 27 months in prison, and ordered to pay $2.1 million in restitution on Nov. 1.
The brothers were accused of defrauding the United States Postal Service of $2.4 million by insuring empty packages, mailing them to false addresses, then filing insurance claims when they failed to be delivered. Prosecutors alleged they filed 13,640 fake insurance claims from Oct. 1, 2016 to May 1, 2019.
“This was not aberrant behavior that occurred once or twice, but was consistent and widespread fraudulent conduct,” prosecutors wrote in their sentencing memorandum.
The brothers pleaded guilty to one
