San Bernardino Superior Court will host a virtual town hall from 12 to 1:15 p.m April 13. Assemblymember Eloise Gomez-Reyes will be on a panel with Yolo Superior Judge David Rosenberg and San Joaquin Superior Judge Barbara Kronlund. San Bernardino Presiding Judge Glenn Yabuno will provide opening remarks, and San Bernardino Superior Judges John Pacheco, Khymberli Apaloo and Winston Keh will moderate.

The focus will be on judicial independence, the court’s role and judicial ethics.

“It is important that (the public) understand the separation of powers, what each branch of government does, and how it’s a check and balance for our system of democracy,” Pacheco, who planned the town hall, said by phone.

“Our job is to interpret the law, and to rule accordingly. It is important that the public understands that we have the separation of powers. We have to follow the law like everybody else,” Pacheco continued.

Rosenberg is the current president of the California Judges’ Association. Kronlund was a defender of Judge Aaron Persky during Perksy’s recall. Persky was recalled after he sentenced the Stanford swimmer rapist Brock Turner to six months imprisonment — which was the sentence advised by the probation report.

Gomez-Reyes will speak to the interaction between the legislative and the judicial branches of government.

The panel will answer directions directly from the public.

The court’s flier encourages San Bernardino County residents to share what challenges they see in the judicial system and their ideas to address them.

Online registration is required to attend the event. Questions may be submitted by emailing townhall@sb-court.org.
