Though National Swap Ideas Day is for sharing new product ideas, it’s the anniversary of the day Elias Howe received the first lockstitch sewing machine patent, which he defended in court repeatedly because others used his idea.

Howe’s patent was granted on Sept. 10, 1846, and protects his design to sew fabric together in an upright position.
