A six-hour standoff in Upland Nov. 20 was brought by a long-term criminal defendant who was facing three felony cases for drug crimes.
The San Bernardino Sheriff’s Gang/Narcotics Division executed a search warrant near Upland’s Greenbelt Park at 3:17 p.m. Nov. 20 when a person began firing at them from inside the house, the department said in a press release. The release says Charles Staudenmayer was the only occupant of the house during the shootout.
The house caught on fire at 9:28 p.m, forcing Staudenmayer out. The San Bernardino County Fire Protection District is investigating the fire. Sheriff’s deputies fatally shot Staudenmayer as he exited.
Staudenmayer was facing three felony cases at the time of the fire.
One case (FWV21004534), filed Dec. 8, 2021, brought charges of vehicle theft, receiving stolen property, and two drug-sale charges for incidents that occurred Feb. 19, 2021. A jury trial was set for Aug. 2, 2022, but was vacated July 12, 2022. Pretrial was then set for Nov. 4, 2022, but was continued seven times until it was scheduled for Dec. 20.
A separate case (FWV22000227) was filed Jan. 21, 2022. It brought felony charges for illegally owning an assault weapon, owning a short barreled rifle or shotgun, two counts of owning a firearm despite being prohibited from doing so as a convicted felon and possession of drugs for sale. A jury trial was also set for Aug. 2, 2022, but was also vacated July 12, 2022.
A third case (FWV22002981) filed Aug. 29, 2022, charged Staudenmayer with two counts of possessing drugs for sale.
Staudenmayer also had a long record of concluded cases.
He pleaded guilty to misdemeanor counts of owning prohibited ammunition Aug. 18, 2021 (FWV21001246). He received 120 days in jail with a year of probation. Staudenmayer admitted to violating probation Nov. 22, 2021, and he was ordered to Glen Helen Rehabilitation Center.
He then denied he violated it again on April 28, 2022, while in jail.
That case had 16 hearings to determine if his probation should be revoked from Nov. 22, 2021, to Nov. 14, 2023, with an additional hearing scheduled for Dec. 20.
Staudenmayer pleaded guilty to two felony drug counts in another case (16CR-030229) July 8, 2016, and was sentenced to four years of state prison.
He was convicted of one felony drug sale charge July 9, 2014, (FWV1402457), and was sentenced to 973 days in county jail.
