San Bernardino Superior Judge Khymberli Apaloo was elected as new president of the California Judges Association May 3.
“I feel deeply connected to CJA’s mission, and the people we serve,” said Apaloo, according to a press release. “It is a true honor to serve in this role, and I am committed to working with my peers across the state to further our mission and better serve California’s citizens.”
Apaloo was appointed by former Gov. Jerry Brown on Dec. 5, 2013. From 2012 to 2013, she was a commissioner—a judge-appointed role that manages court cases similar to judges. She manages civil limited and unlimited cases.
She manages civil limited and unlimited cases. From 2003 to 2012, she was a partner at Haslam and Perri LLP, according to Brown’s appointment announcement. From 1998 to 2003, she was an associate attorney at Covington and Crowe. She graduated from the New York University School of Law and the University of California, Berkeley.
Apaloo joined the CJA in 2017, and joined the Board of Directors in 2022. She has served as vice president, co-chaired the Elimination of Bias and Inequity in the Justice System Committee, and served as Chair of the Court Administration and Technology Committee.
She has been awarded Judicial Officer of the Year by Consumer Attorneys of the Inland Empire, the Legendary Champions of Justice Award from the California Association of Black Lawyers and the Access to Justice Award from the Legal Aid Society of San Bernardino.
The CJA was established in 1929. Its mission statement says it is “dedicated to promoting judicial excellence to achieve fair, impartial and equal justice for all through education, ethics, inclusivity, outreach and advocacy.”
Riverside Court Judge Jennifer Gerard was elected secretary and treasurer at the same meeting.
Her term will begin in September.
