Sharunne Lavonne Foster will join Riverside’s bench after serving a year as a commissioner and 17 years as a prosecutor.

Gov. Gavin Newsom announced her appointment on June 18.

Foster joined the bar in 2004, after graduating from Pepperdine University School of Law. She joined the Riverside County District Attorney’s Office in 2005.

As a commissioner, Foster oversaw child support cases in the Hall of Justice. Commissioners are judicial officers appointed by a court’s judges.

Her appointment fills the vacancy made by Judge Mark Johnson’s retirement.

Doreen Boxer, a San Bernardino County public defender from 2006 to 2010, was also appointed to a judgeship, hers in Los Angeles Superior Court.
