Poly High School and Redlands High School Mock Trial teams completed their first round of the California Mock Trial Competition March 14.

The Inland Empire teams, one each from Riverside and San Bernardino counties, are competing in Los Angeles against 30 teams, each having won their respective county’s competitions.

The competition

“We’re really proud of these students. They’ve already accomplished so much, and now they’re really going to be pushed, but that’s when they’ve always brought their best,” said RHS coach Allison Cobb.

Case facts

The mock case revolved around what appeared to be a kidnapping, in the case of People v. Gold.

Emerald Bend City Council candidate Taylor Alexander was found in one of their AirBNBs the day of a debate against political opponent Harper Dorias. Alexander claimed they heard their kidnapper say, “It all comes back around,” a slogan stated repeatedly by Dorias’ spouse, innkeeper Logan Gold. Gold’s thin alibi was a 10-minute conversation with a resident of Emerald Bend.

The final round will be Sunday.

The winning team will compete in the national tournament in Phoenix, Arizona, May 7-10. California teams have won the national tournament twice, according to the Judicial Council of California.

Riverside’s Arlington High School won in 1994.
