San Bernardino Superior Judge Lisa Rogan has been elected to next year’s presiding judge.

Rogan currently serves as assistant presiding judge, and is assigned to handle overflow preliminary hearings in the San Bernardino Justice Center.

Judges also elected Judge Rod Cortez to serve as assistant presiding judge. Cortez handles pre-preliminary hearings in the San Bernardino Justice Center.

The judges will take over from current Presiding Judge R. Glenn Yabuno on Jan. 1.

Rogan has served as supervising judge of the Victorville and Rancho Cucamonga districts, and of the San Bernardino Justice Center Criminal Division. She is chair of the Budget Committee.

She was appointed to the bench by former Gov. Jerry Brown in 2013. Prior to her appointment, Rogan had worked in the San Bernardino District Attorney’s Office. She joined the District Attorney’s Office in 2001, and was promoted to Supervising Deputy District Attorney in 2010.

Before that, Rogan worked in law enforcement. She was a Pomona police sergeant from 1989 to 1997, and was a Los Angeles deputy sheriff from 1983 to 1988. She earned a Juris Doctorate degree from the University of La Verne, College of Law, and an Associate of Science degree from Mount San Antonio College.

Cortez was appointed to the court in 2006. He is currently supervising judge of the San Bernardino Justice Center criminal division, and has served as the supervising judge of the Joshua Tree District. He also was employed with the district attorney’s office. He spent some time in private practice, working as an associate with Tuverson & Hillyard. He received his Juris Doctorate degree from the J. Ruben Clark Law School at Brigham Young University.
