Jan. 2 is National 55 mph Speed Limit Day, in remembrance of President Richard Nixon’s 1974 law that no vehicle was to exceed 55 mph in the United States. The law was intended to reduce gas usage and increase safety.

In 1995 Congress lifted all federal speed control with the National Highway System Designation Act, which gave that authority to the states.

South Dakota has the highest maximum speed limit, at 80 mph in some areas.
