  • Estate of Kurt Weiss and Matt Weiss v. County of Riverside (5:24-cv-00766 ): Civil Rights Act. Unassigned.
    • Matt Weiss, the brother of Kurt Weiss, sues the county on allegations that Riverside Sheriff’s deputies contributed to Kurt’s suicide on April 11, 2022. Kurt was a registered nurse who lived in Temecula. Matt specifically claims that a sheriff’s deputy told Kurt where to find the handgun Kurt shot himself with. Kurt’s partner had hidden the handgun in their attic out of concern for Kurt’s mental health. Sheriff’s deputies were notified of the gun’s location, and one of them called Kurt to inform him of its location, according to the complaint. Kurt had called 911 four times that night, but Sheriff’s deputies had not entered the house to stop him, the complaint said. The complaint brings claims of a state-created danger.
  • John Anthony Rey v. City of Murrieta (5:24-cv-00730): Civil Rights Act. California Central District Judge Hernan Vera presides.
    • Rey files suit claiming that police displayed excessive force when they tackled, tased and arrested him in his home. His suit says that the police were responding to a call of Rey being aggressive and bleeding from his head. Rey was not charged with any crimes, his suit says.
  • Doe #1 M.L. v. San Bernardino Sheriff Department (5:24-cv-00758 ): federal question: other civil rights. Unassigned.
    • M.L. claims she was sexually assaulted by a county doctor and correctional officers in 2013 while being held at the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Central Detention Center.
  • California River Watch v. Daggett Community Services District (5:24-cv-00727): federal question. California Central District Judge Philip Gutierrez presides.
    • River Watch, a nonprofit, sues the government of the small desert community Daggett on claims that they fail to ensure their water supply does not exceed the mandatory maximum level of arsenic and uranium.

Americans with Disabilities Act

  • Darwin Boggs v. Adeeb Hattar (5:24-cv-00728): Americans With Disabilities Act. California Central District Judge Otis Wright, presides.
    • Boggs claims San Bernardino’s Rocky Liquor, in Sterling Plaza on the corner of Sterling Avenue and East Highland Avenue, violated the ADA by not having their disability-accessible parking space designated according to ADA standards.
  • Darwin Boggs v. Lone Bard 2021, LLC (5:24-cv-00736): Americans With Disabilities Act. California Central District Judge Kenly Kato presides.
    • Boggs claims San Bernardino’s Mother’s Nutritional Center, on the corner of Del Rosa Avenue and East Highland Avenue, violated the ADA by not having their disability-accessible parking space designated according to ADA standards.
  • Darwin Boggs v. Hannah’s Restaurant, Inc. (5:24-cv-00748): Americans With Disabilities Act. California Central District Judge Kenly Kato presides.
    • Boggs claims San Bernardino’s Hannah’s Restaurant, near the intersection of North Golden Avenue and East Highland Avenue, violated the ADA by not having their disability-accessible parking space designated according to ADA standards.
  • Cameron Harrell v. Winfund Investment LLC (5:24-cv-00737): Americans With Disabilities Act. California Central District Judge Stanley Blumenfeld Jr. presides.
    • Harrell claims Rancho Cucamonga’s The Combine Kitchen, near Route 15’s exit onto Foothill Boulevard, violated the ADA by not having their disability-accessible parking space designated according to ADA standards.
  • Cameron Harrell v. Foothill Market Enterprise, LLC (5:24-cv-00749): Americans With Disabilities Act. California Central District Judge Jesus Bernal presides.
    • Harrell claims the Guitar Center store next to Route 15’s exit onto Foothill Blvd. violated the ADA by not having a level surface slope or a parking space designated according to ADA standards. 
  • Cameron Harrell v. Patel C. Bhailalbhai (5:24-cv-00764): Americans With Disabilities Act. California Central District Judge Sunshine Sykes presides.
    • Harrell claims the Redwing Inn, three miles east of Route 15’s exit onto Foothill Blvd., violated the ADA by not having any parking space designated for people with disabilities.

Labor

  • Jace Allbright v. Southern California Permanente Medical Group Inc. (5:23-cv-00022): job discrimination (employment). California Central District Judge Jesus Bernal presides.
    • Allbright worked as a physical therapist at Permanente’s Ontario Medical Center until he was fired for refusing to take the COVID-19 vaccine. He argues that the medical organization violated his civil rights by refusing to accept his claim for a religious exemption as serious. 

Prisoner rights

  • Bruce Koklich v. Gavin Newsom (5:24-cv-00721): prisoner civil rights. California Central District Judge Fernando Aenlle-Rocha presides.
    • Koklich and Lawrence Remsen, two inmates at Chino’s California Institute for Men, filed a suit on claims that the state has been mis-sentencing defendants.
  • Joseph Lee Haddick v. Warden (5:24-cv-00744): petition for writ of habeas corpus. California Central District Judge Wesley Hsu presides.
    • Haddick, an inmate at Victorville’s federal prison, files a petition arguing that his sentence does not reflect the credits he gained from being in custody prior to his custody.
