  • June Mayfield v. San Bernardino County (5:24-cv-00773): Civil Rights Act. California Central District Judge Sunshine Sykes presides.
    • Mayfield was incarcerated at San Bernardino County West Valley jail, in Rancho Cucamonga. At 7:12 a.m., July 8, three inmates opened their cell doors and beat and stabbed Mayfield, the lawsuit alleges. Mayfield was sent to the hospital. Despite being the victim, Mayfield was disciplined. The inmate discipline report against him did not mention the stabbing, or how the inmates were able to pop open their cell dors, the lawsuit claims. The suit says the county has been negligent in its care of inmates, and in doing so created a violation of the 14th Amendment right to due process.
  • Estate of Rocky Romer v. County of San Bernardino (5:24-cv-00777): Civil Rights Act. California Central District Judge Kenly Kato presides.
    • The family of Rocky Romer sue on claims that the county sheriff’s deputies’ use of force against Romer on April 17, 2022, was unnecessary. According to their complaint, deputies showed up after Romer’s girlfriend made a 911 call following a non-violent argument. Romer was sitting outside his girlfriend’s house when deputies arrived. After learning that Romer had a gun, deputies conducted an unnecessary “full-scale militarized assault of Mr. Romer’s vehicle,” the complaint claims. A SWAT team used a military assault vehicle, concussion bombs and chemical agents, it continues. They broke the back window of his car, then threw in tear gas. Romer then killed himself with his gun. The complaint brings seven claims: for unreasonable search and seizure, due process violation, deprivation of the right to familial relationship, municipal liability, assault and battery, wrongful death and violation of California’s civil rights law.
  • Estate of Richard Osaki v. San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department (5:24-cv-00838): Civil Rights Act. Unassigned.
    • Richard Osaki died of a drug overdose in San Bernardino’s West Valley Detention Center April 10, 2023. His family sued on claims that county deputies should have known about his drug use and still placed him with inmates known for drug use and distribution. They bring nine charges: failure to protect from harm, failure to provide medical care, deprivation of the right to familial relationship, municipal liability, supervisory liability, wrongful death, medical malpractice, public entity’s failure to provide medical care and violation of California’s civil rights law.
  • Dejon Hemphill v. County of San Bernardino (5:24-cv-00825): Civil Rights Act. California Central District Judge Kenly Kato presides.
    • Hemphill claims he was unjustly beaten by San Bernardino police officers on April 2, 2023, following a traffic stop due to his tinted windows. He brings claims of unreasonable detention and arrest, excessive force, denial of medical care, municipal liability, battery, negligence and violation of California’s civil rights law.
  • Ransome Ndi Nfor v. City of Perris (5:24-cv-00792): transferred from Riverside Superior Court – Civil Rights Act. California Central District Judge Kenly Kato presides.
    • Nfor sues Perris after being hit by the car of a man chased by Perris police on Dec. 8, 2023. The man, Michael Arreola, is also a defendant. Nfor brings charges of negligence and violation of civil rights.
  • Scott Joseph Faulkner v. County of Riverside (5:24-cv-00799): prisoner civil rights. California Central District Judge Otis Wright, presides.
    • Faulkner, an inmate at the Robert Presley Detention Center, claims Riverside Sheriff Chad Bianco “allowed a custom of deliberate interference to (Faulkner’s) serious medical need in violation of the Constitutional 14th Amendment due process clause.” He claims he was not provided with a CPAP machine for his diagnosed sleep apnea, despite having a court order requiring it.
  • Darwin Boggs v. MG Tax Service LLC (5:24-cv-00834): Americans With Disabilities Act. California Central District Judge Sunshine Sykes presides.
    • Boggs claims a notary public business at 288 W Highland Ave., San Bernardino, violated the ADA by not having its ADA-accessible parking place designated up to ADA standards.
  • Darwin Boggs v. Joser Herrera (5:24-cv-00808): Americans With Disabilities Act. California Central District Judge Kenly Kato presides.
    • Boggs claims an insurance and tax service at 412 W. Highland Ave., San Bernardino, violated the ADA by not having its ADA-accessible parking place designated up to ADA standards.
  • Kevin Tate v. Rob Bonta (5:24-cv-00814): Civil Rights Act. California Central District Judge Sherilyn Garnett presides.
    • Tate, a truck driver, filed a complaint to overturn the denial of his concealed carry permit application. He needs a weapon due to work deliveries into dangerous areas, his complaint says. He claims his application was denied due to a misdemeanor conviction three decades ago. 
  • Darren Michels v. Amazon.com Services, LLC (5:24-cv-00829): transferred from county court – Civil Rights Act. California Central District Judge James Selna presides.
    • Michels, a former warehouse employee at Amazon’s Mira Loma warehouse, by the intersection of Route 60 and the I-15, sues on claims of disparate treatment, failure to accommodate, infliction of emotional distress and violation of the Fair Employment and Housing Act. He claims he was improperly fired after taking time off to mourn his grandfather’s death, was not communicated with regarding his time off request and was not given the proper accommodations required due to his autism.
  • Charles N. Belssner v. Assurance Wireless Lifeline (5:24-cv-00768): restrictions of use of telephone equipment. California Central District Judge Jesus Bernal presides.
  • Ryan Lukman v. Safe Haven Security Services, LLC (5:24-cv-00770): transferred from county court – labor-management relations. California Central District Judge Philip Gutierrez presides.
